Take Advantage of Your Owner’s Manual

These general tips can give you a solid foundation, but the operating manual provided with your lawn mower will cover all the specific information you need to maintain your equipment. You should always refer to your operating manual for more detailed instructions, and to learn which parts and products are compatible with your mower. You can also use the blank pages in your manual to keep a service log.

Stay on Top of Regular Maintenance

Most lawn mowers require the following tasks to be performed at regular intervals:

  • Changing the oil.
  • Cleaning or replacing the spark plugs.
  • Sharpening and adjusting the mower blades.
  • Fogging the engine.
  • Cleaning the mower and undercarriage.
  • Adding fuel stabilizer to the gas tank, or removing old fuel prior to storage.

Follow a Schedule

Timing is critical when it comes to mowing your lawn, and the same goes for maintaining your mower. The end of mowing season is the ideal time to work on your mower. Here in Texas, you are probably going to set aside your mower sometime between late October and early December. Make sure to complete annual maintenance tasks before placing your mower in storage. Remember to add fuel stabilizer to the gas tank, or else empty the fuel system completely. This will prevent degraded gasoline from harming the engine over time.

You should also handle any repairs prior to storage, no matter how small. Even a minor issue can grow into a more serious problem while your equipment sits in storage. When your mower has been properly winterized, you should have no trouble firing it up again when mowing season comes back around.

Keep it Clean

Last but not least, you should not underestimate the importance of cleaning your mower. Mowing is a dirty job, and your mower will need a thorough cleaning at least twice per season. To clean your mower, first spray the deck and undercarriage with a hose to loosen up any caked-on dirt, then scrub it clean using a soft brush. Make sure your mower has dried completely before it goes back into storage.

Remember that even the most diligently maintained mower may have the occasional problem that requires the expertise of a mechanic. If your mower is not performing as it should, you can count on the qualified technicians here at Flanagan’s Outdoor Power Equipment to identify and solve the problem in a timely fashion.
