Hedge Clippers Safety Guide
Hedge Clippers Safety & Maintenance Guide
Keeping your hedges tidy and well-manicured is so much easier with power hedge clippers. The results always seem more uniform and beautiful. However, though they make hedge care easier, as with all outdoor power equipment there are some do’s and don’ts of the mechanics of how to use them, and some maintenance that should be done for their longevity.
Our experts here at Flanagan’s Outdoor Power Equipment have prepared a safety and maintenance guide on how to use your equipment to avoid hazards. Keep reading to find out more about these tools and then come and see our selection! We’re in Sherman, Texas serving commercial and residential yard care customers all the way to Plano and McKinney, TX.
When to Trim Your Hedge
Never cut bushes or hedges in the rain, and this is especially important when using an electric hedge trimmer. Make sure that there are no nesting birds where you plan to trim your hedge.
Proper Attire
When using a hedge clipper it is recommended that you wear clothing that will keep you safe. Avoiding clothing that fits too loosely. The following are items that should also be worn:
- Boots.
- Long sleeves.
- Long pants.
- Eye protection.
Clear the Area
Remove any dead leaves or debris that may be stuck in your hedge. This helps prevent debris from jamming your hedge clippers. If you need to move anything out of the way to give you the best access to the hedge, do so before starting.
Miscellaneous
Make sure children and pets are inside. Mark a safe zone that no one can enter while using the hedge clippers. If you’re using electric hedge clippers, make sure that the cable is long enough to reach the hedges you’ll be trimming. If it's not you can use an extension cord. However, do not use multiple cords. Be sure that the cords are flat and do not form a trip hazard.
Maintenance Tips
As soon as you finish trimming your hedges it’s important to clean your hedge clippers. Sap and debris can easily get stuck in the blades, and leaving it like this can cause the clippers to be less efficient the next time you use them. Turn the machine off, gently remove any loose debris and clean the blades.
To sharpen the blades, release the blades and clamp the first one into a vice. Slide a metal filer at a 38-degree angle from bottom to top for the entire length of the blade. To test its sharpness, gently bring a piece of paper down over the edge. If it cuts, your blade is ready. Apply linseed oil and move on to the other blade. Once both blades are sharpened, screw them back onto your hedge clipper and it’s ready for use next time!
