Routine maintenance is key to ensuring safe and reliable performance, and protecting yourself and others from potential hazards. If you need a quick refresher course on chainsaw maintenance, read on for some tips from Flanagan’s Outdoor Power Equipment!

Getting Started

Before working on your chainsaw, remember to disconnect the spark plug (for gas chainsaws) or unplug it from power (for electric chainsaws). This important safety precaution will prevent your chainsaw from accidentally starting up while you perform maintenance.

Before Each Use

The following maintenance checks should be performed before each use of your chainsaw:

  • Ensure that all the safety features, such as the chain brake, throttle trigger lockout, and emergency switch, are in proper working order.
  • Test the throttle trigger for smooth operation. If the trigger sticks, or if the engine fails to idle after releasing the trigger, discontinue use until the issue is resolved.
  • Tighten any loose components.
  • Inspect the chain and sharpen it as needed to maintain optimal cutting performance.
  • Check and adjust the chain tension as needed for safe and efficient operation.
  • Inspect the air filter, and clean or replace it as needed.
  • Ensure the bar groove is clean to minimize wear and tear on the chain.
  • Inspect the drive sprocket for signs of wear, and replace it as needed.
  • Clear any debris blocking the lubrication hole.
  • Rotate the bar periodically to promote even wear distribution.

Every Week

To maintain the optimal performance of your chainsaw, we recommend performing these maintenance tasks at least once a week:

  • Remove, inspect, and clean the spark plug. Replace the spark plug as needed.
  • Ensure the spark plug gap measures 0.5 mm.
  • Take off the chain, inspect the bar, and file down any burrs as needed.
  • Examine the starter, test the recoil spring, and clean the fins on the flywheel.
  • Clean or replace the muffler screen as needed.
  • Clean the carburetor, airbox, and cooling fins as needed.
  • Test the anti-vibration features to make sure they are working properly.
  • Thoroughly lubricate the clutch drum bearings.

Every Month

Finally, make sure to complete these chainsaw maintenance tasks at least once a month:

  • Clean the carburetor’s exterior.
  • Inspect the wiring, cables, and plugs for signs of wear and tear.
  • Inspect the fuel filter, and clean or replace it as needed.
  • Clean the insides of the fuel and oil tanks.
  • Inspect the brake band, and replace it as needed.
  • Check the clutch for signs of wear and tear.

By performing all these maintenance tasks on the recommended schedule, you can ensure the longevity and efficiency of your chainsaw!
